There have been a number of news stories about more efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles, including those that are currently on the road and those that will hopefully be there in the near future. 

Recently, a Peugeot 308 HDi drove right across South Africa from the North Cape Coast to the KZN Coast on a single tank of diesel.  The 1.6 litre hatcnback achieved a fuel efficient of 3.4 litres / 100km.  Read here for more information. Joule, an electric car developed by Cape Town-based company Optimal Energy was launched at the Paris International Motor Show in the beginning of October.  This car will go into production in South Africa at the end of 2010 and should be a great addition to the current car market in South Africa.  

I also recently had the opportunity to drive the new Lexus Hybrid, which was launched in South Africa at the beginning of October.  This car designed for the top performance, upper end of the car market has been designed to get the best performance of the the hybrd petrol / battery vehcile.  For more information visit the the Lexus website.  

The City of Cape Town launched their Green Goal Action Plan for the City of Cape Town was launched on 17 October and has highlighted transport and mobility as a key theme for greening the 2010 Soccer event.  This is closely linked to the National Green Goal Action Plan that is currently being finalised that has also highlighted the importance of the transport sector in promoting and implementing a green event for 2010.  Visit the Cape Town 2010 website for more information.
