Establishment and upgrade of Park 'n Ride Facilities at selected Rail Stations

The short term focus of the project is on current Park 'n Ride facilities, with particular focus on those that are not currently well utilised.  Originally 8 stations were identified for upgrade along the Southern Suburbs line including the Cape Flats line and the Monte Vista Line, with the total number of bays that are not used amounting to 730 bays.  The stations selected were Monte Vista, De Grendel, Avondale, Fish Hoek, Heathfield, Steurhof, Claremont and Lansdowne.  Further investigation has resulted in four additional stations being added to the list of stations to be upgrade, namely:

  • Wetton and Ottery Stations - with the implementation of the N2 BMT lane in 2007 and its implication on private vehicle delays, more vehicles are using other easy-west links like Ottery, Landsdowne-Wetton, Turfall and Klipfontein roads.  Wetton and Ottery stations are adeqautely located to provide an alternative to these users.
  • Muizenberg Stations - The Main Road between Muizenberg and Clovelly is currently being upgraded and this construction will last for at leat the next 18 months.  This construction will have significant impacts on traffic as this is the most direct route between Muizenberg and Clovelly.  The Simonstown rail line runs parallel to this route.  Muizenberg together with Fish Hotek Rail Station Park and Ride will provide an attractive alternative for residents, commuters and tourists to access destinations along this scenic route.
  • Kuilsriver Station is currently a well utilised Park and Ride Station.  There is a need to expand and improve the safety aspect of this station to meet the needs of the current and growing market in the area.
