SEA is actively engaged in implementing projects around:
SEA has a wealth of experience with renewable and clean energy, including project management on large and small-scale implementation projects, system design optimisation and commissioning, policy and strategy analysis and development for national and local government. We have led integrated energy planning exercises in Southern African countries and cities, leading to more cost-effective sustainable development paths. SEA also advises developers, architects and individuals undertaking building work who wish to make their projects more sustainable. This advice includes passive solar design and thermal performance, suitable building materials and finishes, renewable energy use and technology, efficient appliances and general resource efficiency. We have designed and built our own offices: a 'future-normal' Green Building. We have extensive experience in sustainable low-cost housing.
CFLs WorkshopSEED promotes energy efficiency and safe use of appropriate energy sources and technologies amongst households, NGOs and local authorities in urban areas. In the course of its promotion of energy efficient lighting, the issue of household disposal of CFLs (compact fluorescent lightbulbs) arose. To this end in July 2002 Bonesa agreed to sponsor a workshop co-ordinated by SEA that would bring together key roleplayers in the hope of finding sustainable solutions to the disposal of CFLs in South Africa. Bonesa coordinates the 3-year Efficient Lighting Initiative in South Africa and seeks to transform our lighting market through the promotion of energy efficient lamps and luminaries.A full day multi-stakeholder workshop was held on 1 August 2002, in Gugulethu, Cape Town with the ambitious aim to define a framework that would initiate a strategy and a pilot project to deal with the disposal of CFL’s in an environmentally sound manner, which best meets the needs of all stakeholders. Twenty-three participants attended but unfortunately the primary manufacturers of energy efficient light bulbs did not attend. There was a high level of participation with many good ideas being generated. Unfortunately it was difficult to pin down a specific solution in the absence of national hazardous waste policy. It was agreed that Bonesa will approach the manufacturing companies to gain their support and commitment to an action implementation strategy. South Africa could provide a model for other countries facing the same challenge, (SA will be the first of 7 ELI countries implementing CFL programmes, to initiate a safe disposal initiative). In August 2002 the workshop report: “Responsible Disposal Of Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (Cfl’s) Initial Think Tank Workshop Report” was sent to all relevant stakeholders. Market Analysis of the SME Energy SectorThe Shell Foundation is seeking to establish a fund to provide attractive commercial financing for black SMEs which further their overall goal of ‘promoting modern energy services for the poor’. SEA was requested to undertake the necessary energy-related research and analysis to orientate this fund and identify initial opportunities and constraints. The work was undertaken with the Small Business Project - a Johannesburg-based consultancy. Cleaner ProductionAs a member of the Cleaner Production Group, SEA performs energy audits on residential, commercial and government buildings to identify cost-effective and environmentally sound energy saving opportunities. We assist with implementing energy efficiency measures and do monitoring to verify and quantify improved energy performance. Tygerberg Administration Buildings (Parow) Energy Audit and RetrofitAs a part of the CCP programme, Cape Town has embarked on various projects to reduce the city’s carbon footprint. One such is being undertaken by SEA - Energy retrofit of the Tygerberg Administration buildings. CO2 savings of around 160 tons/year are anticipated as a result of implementation. Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality Environmental Management Systems AuditThis project was in response to a call for tenders from Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) for an Environmental Management System (EMS) / Cleaner Production and Energy Audit for the Eastern Germiston Centre and Germiston Civic Centre Buildings as well as a draft framework for the implementation of these programmes in the organisation. The project entails building capacity in EMM staff to do future audits and manage the EMS. Cleaner Production in the Tourism & Hospitality IndustrySEA was awarded a tender to work with 9 small and medium hotels (selected by the Provincial government DEA&DP) to help them improve their energy, water and waste performance. The project involved undertaking assessments of the hotels in these three fields, making recommendations, and assisting them with implementing interventions to improve their environmental performance in these areas. The development of a ‘green rating system’ for hotels is also being explored in the project. The project was unique in that DEA&DP staff participated actively in the project as a means of building their capacity in this area. Cleaner Production in the ICLEI HotelsThis project was recently awarded to SEA by the City of Cape Town and ICLEI, and also involves waste, water and energy assessments and implementation support for hotels. Eight city hotels are being covered, and the project has a strong capacity building focus for City staff, hotel staff and students participating in the project. The project is part of a bigger initiative to ‘green’ the international ICLEI conference being hosted by the City in February 2006. LEAP Modelling for City of Cape TownSEA was part of a team led by the Energy Research Centre undertaking modelling to assess Cape Town’s energy future. The project explored various alternative energy scenarios and compared energy, cost, pollution and climate change implications for these scenarios against the business as usual scenario. The outputs of the modelling work are documents, included in a popular article, and served as important inputs to the finalisation of the Cape Town Energy and Climate Change Strategy. Climate ChangeCities for Climate Protection (CCP) CampaignSEA undertakes green house gas (GHG) inventories, project identification and development, lobbying, networking and materials development.SEA has been contracted by the City of Cape Town to achieve the milestones of the CCP campaign:
The results and experiences of the CCT in the CCP campaign have been presented at the CCP National Workshops (Buffalo City in July 2002, eThekwini in February 2003). SEA assisted the CCT in arranging the 4th National CCP workshop in Cape Town in November 2002 and to host the ICLEI intern from Canada. The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (Directorate: Climate Change and Ozone Layer Protection) is considering expanding the CCP campaign beyond the current eight cities and requested to CCP campaign in CCT to provide feedback on their learning’s’. The CCP campaign has also provided data and contact details for the LAES State of Energy Report. The project which have been selected using criteria include:
