REEEP Phase 1 - Solar Water Heaters |
|
The objective of this 21-month project is to assist in the development of financial and legal solar water heater (SWH) mass implementation mechanisms in South African cities. The business case for financing SWHs on a monthly payback scheme is compelling, and the project has made this case to government and business in an effort to catalyse the market. Two implementation mechanisms have been looked into, one city driven and one business driven. View the links below for further information. The project has also assisted the City of Cape Town in moving its energy efficient water heating bylaw forward. This legislation when passed will provide a legal mass implementation mechanism for (mostly) solar water heaters in the city, and will set the precedent for other cities to follow. Another output of the project is a ‘How to implement Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency interventions’ manual for city officials. Interventions include SWH’s, efficient lighting, and efficient buildings amongst others. This manual provides general information around energy efficiency and renewable energy interventions, makes the sustainable case for their implementation, and provides guidance to cities around how they can assist in the rollout.
