GreenStaySA is an environmental rating system for the hospitality sector that was developed in partnership with the Western Cape Provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.  The project emerged from cleaner production assessments and support work that was undertaken in the hospitatliy sector from 2007 onwards, where the need for an effective, user-friendly, inexpensive rating support system became apparent.  GreenstaySA is based on international best practice and includes an online manual and rating facility, thereby avoiding much of the cost of assessments associated with conventional rating schemes (see www.greenstaysa.org.za).  It is aligned with the National Minimum Standards for Responsible Tourism. The work was funded by the British High Commmission, DEFRA (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the UK), and the Western Cape Province Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
