Green Operating Principles
1. Re-use resources
- Re-use paper (or give partly used paper to schools)
- Re-ink printer cartridges
2. Recycle waste
- Recycle paper, cardboard
- Recycle tins, glass
- Recycle organics (into compost)
- Recycle plastic
- Ensure safe disposal - of batteries, CFLs and other hazardous waste
3. Reduce energy consumption
- Avoid heating and cooling as much as possible (e.g. aircons)
- Use efficient lighting (CFLs)
- Don't leave lights on in offices and toilets, etc. unnecessarily
- Don't leave extractor fan on in toilets
- Set computer screen to hibernate power settings to save energy
- Switch off equipment when not in use for long periods (overnight)
4. Clean energy sources
- Use green/renewable/cleaner electricity and other energy sources where possible
5. Purchasing
- Buy local where feasible - stimulate local employment & reduce transport environmental impacts
- Buy recycled products where possible (stimulate demand) - e.g. recycled paper
6. Use water efficiently
- Building has low-flush toilets, low-flow showerheads
and kitchen taps, grey water re-use, water efficient garden, and will have
rain water tanks
7. Promote natural systems
- Develop and maintain a healthy garden
- Reduce paved surface area
8. Reduction in synthetic chemical use
- Use products with natural/organic contents: cleaners, paints, soaps, sprays, garden fertilizers, insecticides, etc.
9. Transport efficiency
- Facilitate/encourage lift sharing amongst staff
- Facilitate use of public transport by staff
- Consider video/telephone conferencing rather than physical meeting
- Fly only when absolutely necessary
10. Annual organisation environmental assessments
- Undertake an annual environmental assessment of the organisation's performance, and document
11. Employment creation
- Maximise employment for disadvantaged people, use manual labour rather than automation
12. 'Human-friendly' workspaces
(unhealthy, unpleasant work environments make life, never mind work, unsustainable)
- Create pleasant spaces to relax
- Massages and other relaxing activities during office hours?
- Provide advice/seminars on working without stress?
- Accommodate children
- Interact with the garden, grow food in the garden and eat it!
